Vận may
“Xin lỗi cậu, chúng tôi không thể làm gì hơn được. Bệnh của cậu đã ở giai đoạn cuối.”
“Dạ, sao cơ? Bác sĩ mới nói gì?” Anh say sẩm mặt mày, không thể tin nổi sự thật này.
“Cậu còn khoảng sáu tháng nữa để sống…”
Anh ngất xỉu.

Mình nhớ lại và kể cho bạn câu chuyện có thật này khi mình nghe Lời Chúa ngày hôm nay.
“Ngươi hãy chia cơm cho người đói,
rước vào nhà những người nghèo không nơi trú ngụ;
thấy ai mình trần thì cho áo che thân,
không ngoảnh mặt làm ngơ trước người anh em cốt nhục.
Bấy giờ ánh sáng ngươi sẽ bừng lên như rạng đông,
vết thương người sẽ mau lành.” (Is 58: 7-8)
Đó là Lời Chúa linh hứng qua miệng ngôn sứ I-sa-i-a. Bảy thế kỷ sau ông, Thầy Giêsu của chúng ta khẳng định: “Chính anh em là ánh sáng cho trần gian… ánh sáng của anh em phải chiếu giãi trước mặt thiên hạ, để họ thấy những công việc tốt đẹp anh em làm, mà tôn vinh Cha của anh em, Đấng ngự trên trời.” (Mt 5: 14,16)
Ta có thể tạm tóm lược nội dung Lời Chúa ở trên thế này: ta được mời gọi để chữa lành các vết thương của bản thân qua việc trở nên ánh sáng. Nghe như vậy vẫn có vẻ mơ hồ, phải không bạn? Mình xin kể tiếp câu chuyện trên để minh hoạ.
Bệnh nhân đang trong giai đoạn cuối của căn bệnh nan y là một sinh viên đại học, sắp sửa tốt nghiệp. Tương lai phía trước đang mở ra với thật nhiều hoài bão, ước mơ, dự định. Bỗng một ngày, anh cảm thấy mệt mỏi, đau đớn khác thường. Người ta đưa anh đi nhà thương. Kết quả là anh chỉ còn khoảng 6 tháng để sống. Nếu ta ở trong tình cảnh như anh ấy, mình sẽ làm gì nhỉ?
Bạn thân mến, sau khi tỉnh lại, anh quyết định làm một việc ý nghĩa: đó là dùng 6 tháng ngắn ngủi còn lại để sống cho những người đau khổ khác. Anh đi đến những trung tâm HIV-AIDS trực tiếp chăm sóc cho các bệnh nhân. Anh đến các trại cùi để rửa ráy vết thương cho họ. Anh tìm đến những kẻ lang thang chẳng biết đi về đâu để an ủi họ cách này cách khác…. Anh hầu như quên đi chính mình.
Có người hỏi anh: “Tại sao lại làm như thế?
Anh trả lời: “Tôi vẫn còn may mắn hơn nhiều người khác.”
“Anh nói sao? Anh may mắn hơn họ? Anh chỉ còn mấy tháng trong khi họ có thể còn mấy năm để sống!”
“Vâng, tôi may mắn hơn họ vì tôi vẫn còn niềm tin vào Chúa Giêsu.”
Bạn biết không, sáu tháng sau, anh vẫn còn sống và không cảm thấy đau yếu nữa. Trở lại bệnh viện để tái khám, các bác sĩ vô cùng ngạc nhiên vì căn bệnh nan y ấy không biết đã đi đâu. Nhưng anh thì biết tại sao anh khỏi bệnh. Khi anh chỉ tập trung vào người khác, tình yêu trong anh bỗng nhiên được thắp sáng làm cho anh quên đi chính mình và nỗi đau của mình. Ánh sáng trong anh lớn lên, chiếu rọi anh, bao trùm anh và chữa lành anh. Anh chìm vào trong ánh sáng chan hoà của tình yêu. Một cách nào đó, tình yêu ấy đã sáng lên nhờ việc anh tiếp xúc với đau khổ của tha nhân. Có thể nói: chính những người đau khổ kia đã chữa lành cho anh khi anh đến với họ.
Mình không biết giải thích thế nào cho thoả đáng, nhưng đây là cảm nghiệm riêng của mình: khi mình đang mang tâm trạng buồn sầu, đau khổ, thất vọng, chán nản,… mình sẽ thật may mắn nếu gặp được một ai đó đang đau buồn hơn mình; rồi nếu mình quan tâm đến họ thì chính mình sẽ được vơi đi nỗi buồn sầu đau khổ một cách tự nhiên và được chữa lành một cách kỳ diệu.
Bây giờ thì mình hiểu tại sao hàng triệu người đau khổ vẫn không ngừng chạy đến với “Người tử tội” chết thê thảm trên thập giá: Giêsu. Tại sao? Vì nơi Giêsu chịu đóng đinh ấy chứa đựng một đau khổ tột cùng có thể bao trùm, xuyên thấu mọi nỗi đau nhân loại. Họ tìm thấy nơi Giêsu đau khổ ấy một sự thông hiểu trọn vẹn và một nguồn chữa lành sâu xa vô tận (Dt 4:15; 1P 2:24).
Bạn thân mến, khi ta đến với những anh chị em đau khổ, nhìn bên ngoài thì ta giống như người làm ơn, nhưng sâu xa bên trong thì ta là người chịu ơn. Trong dòng đời này luôn có người đau khổ dưới nhiều hình thức khác nhau. Ước chi tụi mình biết tranh thủ tận dụng họ như là vận may để sống lời dạy của Thầy Giêsu: “Ánh sáng của anh em phải chiếu giãi trước mặt thiên hạ, để họ thấy những công việc tốt đẹp anh em làm, mà tôn vinh Cha của anh em, Đấng ngự trên trời” và để những vết thương của chính mình được chữa lành.

Luck
“I am sorry. We cannot do anything else. You have got a terminal illness,” said the doctor.
“What did you just say?” He was terribly shocked by the news.
“You have about six months to live…”
He passed out.

I recall this story when I meditate on the Word of God today:
“Share your bread with the hungry,
shelter the oppressed and the homeless;
clothe the naked when you see them,
and do not turn your back on your own.
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
and your wound shall quickly be healed.” (Is 58: 7-8)
That is the inspired passage proclaimed by prophet Isaiah. Seven centuries after him, our Master Jesus affirms:
“You are the light of the world.
… your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your heavenly Father.” (Mt 5: 14,16)
The passages above may be summarized as follows: We are invited to heal our wounds by becoming light. It doesn’t seem very clear, does it? Let me continue to tell you the story with hope to make it clearer.
The patient with the terminal illness was a college student who was about to graduate. The future before him was exciting and promissing. Suddenly one day he felt abnormally exhausted and painful. He was taken to hospital. The test showed that he would only have about 6 months to live. If we were in his situation, what would we feel or do?
Dear friend, after having regained consciousness, he decided to do something meaningful: to dedicate his last six months to those who suffer. He then went to HIV-AIDS centers to take care of the patients. He went to houses for lepers to help clean their wounds. He looked for the homeless to provide them with some comfort…. He seemed to forget himself.
Someone asked him: “Why are you doing this?”
He answered: “I am still more fortunate than many.”
“What? You are more fortunate than them? You only have a few months to live while they may have a few years!”
“Yes. I am more fortunate because I still have faith in Jesus.”
You know what, six months later, he was still alive without feeling abnormally tired or painful any more. At his next check-up, the doctors were astonished. They did not know what happened to his illness; but he knew why he was cured. When he only focused on others, the love in him was lit up that enabled him to forget himself and his pain. The light in his heart was suddenly growing stronger, shining on him, covering him and healed him. He was plunged into the light of love. In a sense, this love was lit up by his interraction with the suffering of others. We can say that it is the other suffering people that healed him when he reached out to them.
I don’t know how to sufficiently explain it, but here is my personal experience: When I am in distress, sadness, disappointment, loneliness,… I find myself lucky if I meet someone who is in a worse situation than mine. Then if I reach out to them, my sorrows will automatically decrease and I am miraculously healed.
Dear friend, now I understand why millions of suffering people keep coming everyday to “The Criminal” who died a terrible death on the Cross: Jesus. Why? Because in the crucified Jesus contains the most radical suffering that can cover and penetrate all the pains of humanity. They find in Jesus a profound understanding, a true sympathy and an inexhaustible source of healing. (Hebrew 4:15; 1Peter 2:24)
My dear friend, when we come to other suffering brothers and sisters, on the outside we may seem to be benefactors, but profoundly on the inside we are beneficiaries. In our journey of life, there are always people who suffer. May we enjoy taking advantage of them as our luck, our precious opportunity in order to practise the word of our Teacher Jesus: “You are the light of the world.… your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father,” and in order to heal our wounds.

La Bonne Chance
“Je suis désolé. Nous ne pouvons pas faire plus pour vous. Votre maladie est en phase terminale,” dit le docteur.
“Quoi? Qu’est-ce que vous venez de dire?” Il ne peut pas croire ce qu’il a entendu.
“Vous avez environ 6 mois à vivre….”
Il s’évanouit.

Je me souviens de cette histoire quand j’entends les paroles de Dieu aujourd’hui.
“Partage ton pain avec celui qui a faim, recueille chez toi le malheureux sans abri, couvre celui que tu verras sans vêtement, ne te dérobe pas à ton semblable. Alors ta lumière jaillira comme l’aurore, et tes forces reviendront rapidement” (Is 58, 7-8)
C’est la parole de Dieu parlée par la bouche d’Isaie. Sept siècles après lui, notre Maitre Jésus affirme: “Vous êtes la lumière du monde…. Que votre lumière brille devant les hommes: alors, en voyant ce que vous faites de bien, ils rendront gloire à votre Père qui est aux cieux.” (Mt 5, 14.16)
Nous pouvons résumer les passages ci-dessus comme suivants: On est invité à nous guérir en devenant la lumière. Peut-être ce n’est pas encore claire. Alors, permettez-moi de continuer de vous raconter cette histoire pour illustrer ce que je veux dire.
Le patient dont la maladie était en phase terminale était étudiant. Il allait terminer ses études. L’avenir avec beaucoup de rêves, de projets, de promesses était ouvert devant lui. Soudain, il s’est senti extrêmement épuisé. On l’a amené à l’hôpital. Le résultat a montré qu’il allait avoir six mois à vivre. Je me demande si nous étions dans la même situation que la sienne, qu’est-ce qu’on allait faire?
Après avoir repris connaissance, il a décidé de faire une chose significative: c’est dédier le reste de sa vie à ceux qui souffrent. Il s’est porté volontaire pour s’occuper des patients de Sida. Il s’est rendu aux centres de lèpres pour les laver…. Il a cherché les sans-abris pour les consoler. Il semblait s’être oublié.
Quelqu’un lui a démandé: “Pourquoi fais tu cela?”
Il a répondu: “J’ai encore plus de chance que beaucoup de gens.”
“Quoi? Tu a plus de chance qu’eux? Tu n’as que quelques mois à vivre pendant qu’ils ont plus de temps que toi.”
“Oui, j’ai plus de chance qu’eux parce que j’ai la foi dans le Seigneur Jésus!”
Alors, après six mois, il est encore vivant. Il se sent en pleine forme. Il se rend à l’hôpital de nouveau, on s’étonne en découvrant que sa maladie est disparue. Ses docteurs ne savent pas ce qui s’est passé mais lui, le sait. Puisqu’il s’est seulement concentré de tout son coeur aux autres, l’amour qu’il témoignait, était si vivement allumé qu’elle l’a fait oublier sa souffrance. La lumière a grandi en lui, l’a couvert et l’a guéri. Il a vécu dans la lumière de l’amour. Dans un certain sens, son amour était alluminé par ses interactions avec la souffrance des autres. On peut même dire que leurs souffrances l’ont guéri lorsqu’il venait à eux.
Je ne sais pas comment l’expliquer suffisamment, mais mon expérience est comme suivante: Quand je suis en état de tristesse, d’isolement, de dépression, de désappointement, etc, j’ai de la chance si je rencontre quelqu’un qui a une situation pire que la mienne. Puis si on prend soin de lui ou d’elle, la souffrance diminue automatiquement et on est miraculeusement guéri.
Maintenant, je comprends pourquoi des millions de personnes qui apportent de lourds fardeaux dans la vie viennent à celui qui est mort de la manière la plus terrible: sur la croix: Jésus. Pourquoi? Parce que en Jésus se trouve la souffrance la plus profounde qui peut contenir toutes les souffrances humaines. Ils trouvent en l’homme souffrant, Jésus, la compréhension entière, la sympathie véritable et la source intarissable de guérison (He 4:15; 1Pr 2:24).
Mes frères et soeurs, quand nous venons aux autres, vu de l’extérieur, il semble que nous sommes bienfaiteurs, mais vu de l’intérieur, c’est nous qui devons être reconnaissants. Alors il y a toujours des gens qui souffrent autour de nous. Que nous sachions en profiter comme une chance pour pratiquer le parole de notre Maitre Jésus: “Que votre lumière brille devant les hommes: alors, en voyant ce que vous faites de bien, ils rendront gloire à votre Père qui est aux cieux” et pour que nos blessures soient guérie.
